Something I’ve heard more times than I can count is: “I could be vegan, except I could NEVER GIVE UP X.” And that X is usually cheese. You’ve probably heard that before, or perhaps you said it: “I could give up meat and eggs; I don’t really eat that much anyway, But I could NEVER GIVE UP CHEESE.”
And so I often ask: “Well, what are you eating now?” And the response is usually, “Well, everything.” And I ask, “Including meat and eggs – things you said you don’t eat a lot of and could easily give up?” And they say, “Yes.”
And I say, “Well, if you say you could give up everything except cheese, then then give up everything except cheese! Stop eating all other animal products except cheese for now — at least do what you’re able and willing to do. But to not do anything at all because you think you have to do everything makes absolutely no sense. It’s the ultimate example of self-sabotage.
“Don’t do nothing because you can’t do everything. Do something. Anything.”
Each step you take will bring you closer to the person you want to be – and to the animals you want to help. Start where you are. Be honest with yourself. And do something. Anything.
You will be better for it, and so will the animals.
