I was much older but “met” him through this amazing book. I also met John McDougall and learned about animal husbandry, research and a remarkable holistic vet, Jack Long, all near the same time. My life was transformed. I credit these amazing men with opening my mind, listening to my heart and living with a peaceful soul. Thank you, Colleen. You are amazing.
I am so deeply saddened to hear this heartbreaking news, Colleen! Like you, John played a key factor in our becoming vegan 25 years ago, except in our case it was reading his later book, “The Food Revolution.” (I read “Diet for a New America” right after that). I was so lucky to get to meet him at VegSource and Los Angeles’ first WorldFest in Sept 2001 (just a month after going vegan and a couple of weeks after 9-11; I couldn’t imagine a more inspiring and healing gathering of people to be with). John was one of the VegSource speakers and I still get goose bumps recalling his uplifting eloquence (not unlike yours!) and gentle presence.
I saw him again at WorldFest that weekend and got to spend a little time chatting with him (I was going to add a photo of us there but am unable to). I cherish my wonderful memories of that extraordinary man and that very special weekend.

The outpouring of love for John Robbins clearly demonstrates how the power of a single life lived with courage and compassion can impact millions. Never doubt the impact of an idea whose time has come. Indeed his life was his message and what better way to honor his than by living a life that honors all sentient beings. A Diet for a New America shattered my heart wide open and created the space for "everything". I will miss "this great and gentle and beautiful Soul".
