As a companion to my article A Happy Turkey Day — Without the Turkey, in this short video I explore the idea that just because something is traditional doesn’t mean it’s aligned with our current values. Many customs persist simply because they’re familiar, comforting, or expected—yet when we pause long enough to examine them, we often discover they no longer reflect who we are or how we want to show up in the world.
This short reflection encourages us to look gently and honestly at the rituals we repeat year after year: where they came from, what they communicate, and who they impact.
By slowing down and asking whether these rituals still align with who we are—and the compassion we try to live by—we open the door to more intentional, more humane celebrations. It’s an invitation to honor the parts of Thanksgiving that truly matter while letting go of what causes harm.
